Off-Broadway Jewish musical lands in Columbus
by Doreen Cudnik
The off-Broadway hit musical That's Life will be performed on Monday, December 11 at 8:00 pm at the Capitol Theater at the Riffe
That's Life
Center, 77 South High Street in downtown Columbus. The performance, featuring the original New York cast, is presented by Congregation Tifereth Israel.
That's Life is a new musical which comically explores contemporary Jewish life in America. Told through funny and poignant vignettes, the show features an original score by twelve critically acclaimed New York composers and lyricists.
"Issues relating to gay and lesbian Jews are, not surprisingly, one of the sensitive issues this show examines with wit and wisdom," said Cantor Jack Chomsky, of Congregation Tifereth Israel.
Tickets are $10 and available through Ticketron or through Congregation Tifereth Israel, 1354 East Broad Street. For further information, contact the synagogue at 614-253-8523.

Catholic gays on TV
The December installment of In the Life, a gay and lesbian TV newsmagazine, promises to be one of the best, and perhaps most controversial, episode to date. The show will explore the sensitive issue of homosexuality within Roman Catholic institutions, and includes conversations with gay and lesbian students and faculty from the UniverIsity of Notre Dame, where the school administration recently decided to deny an oncampus meeting place for a gay and lesbian student group.
Additional stories include a rare, one-onone interview with George Stephanopoulis, senior advisor to President Clinton; a visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C; and a look at the growing

The Gay '90s with Buck Harris, the first commercial live call-in show directed to the gay community in the Midwest, began airing on Cleveland's WHK in 1993. After three successful years, Harris is moving his show to WERE 1300 AM. The show will air there on Sunday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, beginning December 10.
Harris believes that WERE, which is a
Buck Harris
general talk-
format station, will be a better fit for his kind of program. He also expects to pick up more listeners in the earlier time slot.
WERE station manager John Hill has heard the show several
times and said, "We're excited to add Buck's show to our roster. We also look forward to adding his audience to our listener base."
In addition to the move, Harris has been named co-chair of the National Association of Radio Talk Show Hosts 1996 Convention, to be held in Washington, D.C. next June. The Association is interested in recruiting more talk show hosts like Harris who have shows directed at target audiences.
Paying respects
The HIV/AIDS community in Cleveland was dealt a devastating blow in September with the untimely and tragic death of Dr. John Carey, a world-renowned AIDS researcher and director of the Special Immunology Unit at University Hospitals. Carey was the primary care physician for over 400 AIDS patients in the greater Cleveland area. Since his death, his partner Russell Trusso has been overwhelmed with calls from people inquiring about where Dr. Carey was laid to rest.
and vibrant network of New York performance spaces and companies committed to the development of lesbian images in theater. In the Life also poses the question, "Does the lesbian and gay community suffer from the lack of a national figure to lead its movement?" to several prominent figures in the community, including David Mixner, former adviser to President Clinton; Human Rights Campaign director Elizabeth Birch; National Gay and Lesbian Task Force director Melinda Paras; and past NGLTF director Urvashi Vaid, whose new book Virtual Equality explores this issue.
The show is broadcast on over 70 PBS stations nationwide, but the only one in Ohio is WNEO/WEAO Channels 45 and 49 in Akron and Youngstown, which is also seen on many Cleveland area cable systems. They will air In the Life at midnight Saturday, December 23.
